Bayview - Coomalong
10-11 March 2018
Set on an acre, with spectacular views of Pittwater, Coomalong has been designed around natural sandstone rock outcrops and mature trees to include indigenous and exotic plant species with a sub-tropical feel.
The gardens comprise many sections, including a 'Japanese Style' garden at the main entry, terraced gardens, tropical plantings and a vegetable garden. The site features many mature native trees, including Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum), Corymbia maculata (Spotted Gum), and a huge Eucalyptus acmenoides, (White Mahogany), that is over 135 years old. Tropical style plantings include Heliconia, large Frangipani, palms, Cymbidium orchids and Strelitzia.
The Japanese entry garden was designed by Ken Lamb from Imperial Gardens. The design incorporates an existing pond with waterfall and features granite pathways, lanterns, rocks and typical Japanese plantings including Buddhist Pine, red Weeping Maple, Rhododendron and Weeping Cherry.
The natural, lichen-covered rock outcrops are a strong feature, linking gardens with expansive lawns. Resting areas are generously positioned around the garden, allowing visitors to pause and enjoy their surrounding.
Sue and Peter Glasson have created a welcoming garden amongst the native wildlife, salty air, wind and silty sandstone soil.
